"After we made our presentation on OCC to a group of home school parents, we invited them to take a look at the packed shoe boxes. One young woman lingered over the boxes, carefully looking at each item in them. She looked up at me and asked about how much it would cost to fill a shoe box gift. I told her that it would cost about $15 if you shopped well, and that sometimes businesses may donate some items like school supplies or hygiene products. She thought about it for a minute, then she carefully said, “The children and I could pack one box.” All of a sudden, tears welled up in her eyes. Not knowing what her story was, I went up and wrapped my arms around her in a hug. Then I heard her softly say, “Last year I was on the other end of this box, receiving help from others.” I learned that she had lost her husband suddenly two years ago. Christian friends provided Christmas for her three young children that year, and then again this past Christmas. She wanted to pack a box with her children – to give a portion back of the love and kindness that had been shown to her family." - OCC Volunteer
