After winning the Sports Star of the Year Award at a glitzy SA - TopicsExpress

After winning the Sports Star of the Year Award at a glitzy SA Sports Awards in Sun City on Sunday night, Itumeleng Khune paid tribute to his two families, the Khunes and Kaizer Chiefs. The Bafana Bafana and Chiefs captain said that after he had received such great support during the voting in the Carling Black Label Cup, he believed he stood a chance of winning this award, and was grateful to all those who voted. Accepting his award, Khune said, God is great. As I walked onto the stage, you saw me pointing up, thats my trademark celebration. Whenever we score a goal, I look up in the sky and say, God is great. And he is indeed great. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mr Razzmatazz (Minister Fikile Mbalula) and his team for making this event a success and for honoring the living legends. I think its very important that all of us sitting in this room, we are champions, we are all winners, and we all deserve to be walking away this award, but unfortunately only one can. Ive got a lot of people to thank, but Ill just make it short. Ive got two families, the Khune family, and Kaizer Chiefs family. I think both families have been great, have been supportive. I am where I am today, I have achieved what I have achieved because of the support and love they have given to me. Each and everyone of you in this room, and at home, I just want to say thank-you and to all the people that voted for me - if I can take you back down memory lane, in the Carling Black Label Cup I was able to accumulate 2.7 million votes for that tournament, and Im not surprised why I won this night, I think Ive got more than that, thank-you very much for all the support Ive been getting. I just want to say thank-you to all the football players in this country, past and present. I just want to say thank-you again to the coaches, who have also contributed in my career, past and present, and I just want to say thank-you to all the sponsors who have made this event a success. Khune was nominated for the Sports Star of the Year award with cricketer Hashim Amla, swimmer Chad Le Clos, wheelchair tennis player Lucas Sithole and the only woman nominated, athlete Mapaseka Makhanya.
