Ah yes, and now to the rune stone. Discovered in the 1940s, its either a rock inscribed by Thorvald Karlsefni or Leif Ericson and says The year 1018 was a famine (or ill) year or its just a rock that got hit a few times by a plow. From the get go let it be known Im a acolyte of ABC (America Before Columbus), but Im ambivalent about this particular artifact. I be more skeptical but for the circular marks being plow scarring and the conviction that a Yankee farmer isnt going to hit a big ole rock with his plow too many times before he either moves it or just plows around it. Maybe we can talk about The Spirit Pond Runes later, however? This stone used to be a must see stop on the Popham beach guided tour, but its long since fallen from favor and now languishes virtually unseen off that private road on Hoss Ketch Point. Its easy to find being no more than a couple feet off to the side but the markings are pretty eroded.
