Ahhhh, the days of summer. I am not usually home at this time of day. I took off work because I had some things I need to finish up. I worked hard, and decided to treat myself with a visit to the front porch. This is the place that renews my spirit. I relax on the swing and watch as the world goes by. It is here that the ghosts of family past seem most close around me. This is the place where I sat many hours with family members, especially my precious Mama Buchanan. Here she and I casually observed people that we knew passing by, sometimes marveled at the fact that so many passed by that we did not know and we addressed the problems of the world. We spoke of things from presidents, to economics, to religion, to broken hearts, and sometimes we sat without talking at all. I probably learned more in this old porch swing than I did in all the years I went to school, on all the jobs I ever worked, and through a myriad of conversations held with others. My Mama was the most godly person I have ever known. She had a unique way of helping you think for yourself. On any given subject, she was likely to ask how it fit into our Christian philosophy, how it made you feel, how it made others feel, who it would affect in years to come. Simple things like, do you like it; do you need it; can you afford it? Without ever transferring her beliefs on you, she made you think things through. Without ever offering advice, after each conversation, you got up knowing what you needed to do. These days, shes not here anymore. I cant glance up from the floor every once in a while to try to capture a hint of how she felt behind that ageless porcelain face. She never scowled or frowned; she hardly ever wrinkled her brow. Perhaps thats how she remained so young looking, even up to the 101 year mark. She bore any pain and troubles that she carried with a smile on her face. I wish I were more like her. But for now, I will have to settle for time in her front porch swing, considering all the angles that she would, for the decisions of today.
