Airports Close in St. Kitts and Nevis as Gonzalo Bears Down ================= Written by Toni Frederick St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): With Tropical Storm Gonzalo dumping heavy rain on St. Kitts and Nevis, and with winds of nearly 70 Mph with higher gusts, the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on St. Kitts and the Vance Amory International Airport on Nevis were both closed Monday. Operations are expected to resume on Tuesday morning. By late afternoon Monday, the islands were experiencing heavy showers and extremely high winds. The electricity supply was being interrupted in parts of St. Kitts, were there were reports of a number of downed trees around the island and at least one lamp pole. According to Mr. Carl Herbert, Head of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at around 4:00 pm. though, there had been no reports of major property damage or injury. The Met Office was reporting that the sea was extremely rough with swells reaching to 2.1-2.8m or 7-9 feet. There were no ferries running at all between St. Kitts and Nevis on Monday. Warnings remain in place for small craft operators and sea bathers against hazardous sea conditions, and small craft operators are advised to stay in port and seek safe anchorage. Shower activity is expected to continue Monday night, some of which are expected to be moderate to heavy at times accompanied by scattered thunderstorms. With the heavy showers and the expectation of more downpours, a flash flood warning is in place. At 200 PM AST the center of Tropical Storm Gonzalo was located by an Air Force Reserve Reconnaissance aircraft and Guadeloupe radar near latitude 17.4 north, and longitude 62.4 west. Gonzalo is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the Northwest tonight. On the forecast track, the center of Gonzalo will continue to move through the Northern Leeward Islands tonight, and be near or over the Virgin Islands tonight and early Tuesday.
