Al Jazeera features the Spratly Islands dispute... Rich in oil and a crucial trading freeway, theres a political stand-off among six countries in the South China Sea. Eric Campbell travels to the Philippines to meet the people determined to protect their sovereignty. *** Surrounded by serene, aqua waters, the Spratly Islands occupy a pristine stretch of the South China Sea. But the calm waters belie a fierce contest for control of the oil-rich territory with China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei all asserting claims. Asia’s leading military forces are desperately trying to occupy as much of the territory as possible, leading some Filipino marines to live on a rusted ship, surrounded by enemy patrol boats. As tensions build, 101 East travels to the Spratly Islands and asks could this be the site of the world’s next major conflict? Will the next war be fought on water? Is #China responsible? Tell us @AJ101East. #Philippines #SouthChinaSea
