Alans German tour blog #2 [Friday 4th April cont.] …to Bochum.....whoops…..got the departure time wrong……. shoulda been 10.00…..I was still strumming when I got the hurry up call….with Tim short on sleep, thats not a good idea….its raining and its the end of the tax year tomorrow….. I hate totting up receipts and such…..anyway, were on the road by 10.20… I began wondering about all the other musicians on the road…. all in their own little tour bubbles…. setting off for their next gig….and were the very people that will hardly ever see them play. Yet all of us will grow, develop and age on the same roads….some be successful… some not….and always trying to perfect what we do….a noble breed (who am I tryin to kid). I tell you what…this noble breed dont alf get clobbered when it comes to paying van or bus insurance…… were in the same risk category as policemen, firemen and doctors on night duty… Anyway, it keeps us young…playing to you lot that is….just doesnt feel like it sometimes….. Gig…good….no….better than that……. [Saturday 5th April]….to .Gustavsberg. We stop for goulash soup at Munsterland West…despite rumblings, we arrive at the gig in good time and are met by our friend Jochen Melchior. All the PA is set up and ready to go. Omnes operi accinguntur and in a fairly short time…with some creative stage management and a load of gaffer tape…so are we. Though……… Tim has got yet another digital desk to learn. The digital desk, dear reader, has suffered severe operating system diversification….. resulting in a proliferation of menu navigatory nightmares which, although extremely appropriate to their task given a smidge of familiarity, induce real brain ache in itinerant engineers. Put simply……. a little standardisation wouldnt go amiss. Gig…….good…..food and drink…excellent…..top hole... [Sunday 6th April]…..off home. Breakfast overlooking the River Maine…..its salmon, trout, boiled eggs and the usual ham and cheese, muesli, yoghurts, fruit salad etc…..coffee its usual brown bitter self…..off at 11.00…..Everyones slept well and were in goodish mood. Tim and Dil banter in the front seats…..John and Ian discuss the possible routes while plastic Sally, our Navigatrix, decides on another way. Why we just dont buy a map book, Ive no idea….perhaps the arguing is more fun…..anyway, we head West for the channel and home and the domestic sea of daily concerns. Im sure that the Batman filmsve had an influence on car design….all those creases down the sides… Im idly wondering if the number of people who play for a living has risen or are we still the same proportion of the population? Do we listen to more music? Certainly, theres more music about…. but it doesnt follow that more is listened to….what do you think?….. Ian points out that weve just passed a sign for a Museum of Mineral Water…. whatever next? A Museum of famous Hankies ….perhaps a Museum of Toast? What shall we do with the children this weekend, dear? I know! ….lets visit the Museum of Squashed Frogs…..(ridiculous!!) Into fog….the tops of pylons disappear…..the band lapse into travel torpor…two sleep…Ian does the accounts and Im just the pen that writes… Thereve been consequences of this trip…..some songsve grown in the playing….others still need re-thinking….opinions differ, of course, but you cant deny what Dr. Performance tells you….. Now its just the rumble of the tyres and the rushing wind…..on to Calais…… A x
