Alien Rock Bouldering Series 2013/14 Once upon a time…in - TopicsExpress

Alien Rock Bouldering Series 2013/14 Once upon a time…in a climbing wall just down by the shore…..we held this year’s winter series of bouldering competitions. The setters would be keen at 10am to get their space of the wall, their holds, their impact drivers or allen keys and their unique brand of enjoyable fun, hard and devious problems set. Come 1pm, the testing would begin with the questions of “did we get it right? Is it too hard? Is it too easy? Is it just right?” We were back and forth as the comps went on, one too hard, one too easy and two that seemed to be just about right, more or less. So, how did everyone do in the series this year? For the hard category, it was all about the youngsters this year with William Bosi (second year running), Fraser McIllwraith and Ross Kirkland taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Continuing with the youth element, Alexander Bosi and Ivan Baily took 4th and 5th place. In the women’s we had Rachel Carr (second year running), Christie Macleod and Eilidh Vass Payne taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. 4th and 5th place were taken by Jasmine Ryan and Valerie Martinot. In the Vets category we had Chris Watson and our own Malcolm Davies taking 1st and 2nd place, with Brendan Pollitt at 3rd place. Alexander Taylor came in 4th, while Andrew Meldrum came 5th. Again, there is grumbling of a super-vets category for next year’s series. We also had people take part that did not brave the hard category and were more about the fun element of the night, though a lot less from previous years. For the guys, we had Kristian Dela Cour top of the fun category, followed by Chris Ryan and Calum Langdale. The women had 15yr old Morna Baillie top of the girls, with Clare McCarty and 15yr old Isobel Mitchell coming in 2nd and 3rd place. Thanks to everyone who has taken part so far and made our hard work worthwhile. We’re very grateful for the wonderful haul of prizes provided by our generous sponsors Tiso. Adrian knocked on some doors and got us a bunch of prizes from various companies, like Snugpack, Camp, Vango, Edelrid and Source. We also sourced prizes from Mountain Hardwear, DMM, Mammut, Heason Events and Clif Bar. Thanks to Caroline at Serious climbing/Volx for supplying us with a great deal on holds and of course some little trophies. And, of course, thanks to Laura Faithfull, from Community Osteopaths, who turned up to all the competitions to supply advice and help to all the tweaked climbers and setters, but also supplied free sessions as prizes. So, shall we see you for the next round of bouldering events in October? There is also talk of starting a McofS winter boulder series for Scotland. Better get climbing.
