All-Terrain Vehicles, aka ATVs, are fun and can be very useful machines. Hunters like them because they can go places cars or trucks cant reach. Sport riders like them because they can go pretty fast, do stunts like motorcycles do and can be a challenge to ride. Unfortunately these are machines that can be deadly to the uninitiated. Unlike motorcycles they are meant to be ridden upright only, meaning you cant shift the center of gravity to offset centrifugal pull in a turn. And they can flip without warning. A motorcyclist who loses traction and puts his or her bike on the ground can get away from it and--if properly dressed--can avoid serious injury. On an ATV there is no telling where rider and machine will end up in relation to each other. So it follows that ATV riders should use caution and respect the dynamics of the vehicle. Regrettably, those who dont often wind up seriously hurt or worse. Fatal accident involving an ATV in southeast Bexar County early yesterday.
