All body systems become less efficient and more likely to fail as we age.Beta cells in the pancreas are no exception to this and it is accepted that there will be a decline in beta-cell mass and function as we get older. Over the age of 45 years,beta-cell function declines but the rate of decline largely depends on the work load of the beta cells, which is determined by the level and duration of insulin resistance.
