All my big plans of going out to a park today were obliterated - TopicsExpress

All my big plans of going out to a park today were obliterated this morning when Mr 4 said “I don’t want to go out today, my legs hurt” After enquiring why his legs were hurting and getting the response “Because we did so much exercise yesterday” I told him that of course we could stay home and then asked him if he could choose anything at all to do today, what would it be? He responded immediately with “Can we do some painting?” After asking him what he would like to paint, he looked thoughtful for a minute and then said “I know! A rainbow!” Mr 4 helped me to draw the outline of the rainbow and as we drew, we talked about the colours of the rainbow. I remember when I was back in school, a teacher once told me that a good way to remember the colours of the rainbow in order was to say the name ‘Roy G Biv’ and this has stuck with me all these years. When I relayed this story to Mr 4 he looked at me quizzically and said “Is that the rainbow’s real name?” I then described how each ‘letter’ represented a colour of the rainbow and named them all for him. He was curious as to why there wasn’t a pink in the rainbow and I explained to him that the name of that colour in the rainbow was violet. I have a feeling there will be many more discussions about this throughout the day. Once all his friends had arrived, we went outside to the easel to get started. Mr 2.5 was reluctant to paint, not seeming very interested in the rainbow idea so I put up a blank piece of paper and told him that if he changed his mind, it was there waiting for him. About 10 minutes into the activity, Mr 2.5 wandered over and looked at me expectantly. I asked if he would like to paint and he nodded, smiling. The three boys spent a long time at the outdoor easel, chatting and painting in the fresh air. As the rainbow pictures of the 2 older boys began to take shape, they became more and more excited, frequently requesting that I come and see. Meanwhile, Mr 2.5 was content to mix colours and use various sized brushes to complete his masterpiece and to be honest, a cropped photo of his painting looks like something that would hang on the wall of an art gallery! All 3 boys were extremely proud of the finished product, telling me that their Mummy and Daddy will love it!
