Almost all of you that are found on my list of friends dont live close to the St Louis area and dont follow that closely the daily happenings from here. During the last week plus, that hasnt been the case. At this moment I am probably less than 20 miles from where all this is happening. Im down here working. The St Louis Post Dispatch is a great newspaper. Linked is their outstanding editorial that appears in todays (Monday August 18) edition. This situation occuring here is something that is very near the surface in many cities and towns across the country. Indianapolis and Lafayette have their issues that are similar. A watershed moment like the shooting death of Michael Brown the only real difference. Its a time bomb just waiting to explode. Since we are not local to St Louis, we dont really know the history of this place and its collective people and their coexisting. This editorial speaks of that. It also attributes a good amount of this current situation and its root cause to a general apathy on all sides to deal with and communicate about the issues that divide us with respect to racial and social parameters. Instead of working through and talking - and understanding - those concerns and perceptions that do exist, the leaders and those that live in this city collectively just buried their heads in the sand. It was there, just not very visable. Until Ferguson. Plrase read This is a generational event. Then look at how our cities and towns are very similar to how St Louis was just a few days ago. Lets all use this as an example to seek respect and understanding of all people and their views and perceptions. Then talk through those issues and solve those issues and build stronger, more inclusive communities. If we dont do that - who will our Michael Brown be?
