Alright, females of the field, this is your call to solidarity! In case you missed the recent Twitter trend, here’s your friendly reminder to take to social media and post your #womendigging photo! Yesterday, while addressing a women’s justice summit in Istanbul, the Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan declared that gender equality is impossible “because it is against human nature.”[1] He went on to attack feminists, declaring that a woman’s highest place in society is motherhood, but that you cannot explain this to feminists because they “do not accept the concept of motherhood.”[2] Then Erdogan said something that really struck a chord with the archaeological community… “You cannot tell them to go out and dig the soil. This is against their delicate nature.”[3] Oh Mr. Erdogan, never mess with an angry trowel-wielding woman… And so began the furious Twitter backlash! Male and female archaeologists alike tweeted and shared photos of awesome women archaeologists rebelling against that delicate nature of theirs and, shockingly, actually digging!! So to you, fellow diggers, I say join the trend and use the hashtag #womendigging to show us how you or your friends do the impossible. To Mr. Erdogan, well, at least you got one thing right – no one needs to tell us to go out and dig. We’ll meet you in the field.
