Am in Mumbai this weekend to meet with a group of social entrepreneurs trying to solve problems through innovative business solutions. Globally, this is a powerful trend now, with more and more believers. There is a local scale at which such businesses can address big gaps in development - in education, health care, employability, access to finance, etc. In fact, India would have done much better after independence if it had pushed to develop its small and medium enterprises with the kind of budgets that were wasted to the so-called temples of industrialisation. Nimble, innovative economies tend to keep finding their feet in competitive markets. On the other hand, many of our behemoth public sector companies are worth more for the land they occupy than anything they produce. Another reason I like many, small instead of few, big is that I believe social problems cannot be solved by the latter approach. What we fundamentally need to do is increase the number of problem solving PEOPLE and trust them more and more, rather than become overly focusing on trying to find the SOLUTIONS themselves.
