American Samoa government forks out nearly 1 million in back pay Posted at 23:25 on 14 August, 2013 UTC The American Samoa government has paid over 900 hundred thousand US dollars in back wages to 256 employees, resolving findings of an investigation by the US Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division in 2011. Investigators found that some employees’ overtime hours were paid at the regular rate instead of at one and one-half times their normal rates of pay, as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Investigators also found that certain employees were not paid for all of their overtime hours worked. Most of the workers effected are police officers employed by the government’s Department of Public Safety - one officer has received $6,000 in back pay.
