Americans donated $316.2 billion to charitable causes in 2012, according to a new study from Giving USA, the annual report on charitable giving in America. The 3.5% increase in gifts over the previous year comes from individuals (including estate bequests), corporations and foundations. This is the third straight year of reported gains. Giving by individuals, which accounts for the largest percentage of total giving, grew 3.9% in 2012. The biggest gain was in giving by corporations, which rose 12.2%. Giving by foundations increased 2.3%, in part because giving by Community Foundations nationally grew 9.1% last year, which helped bolster the total.
