Amur Leopard (worldwildlife.org/species/amur-leopard) update: - TopicsExpress

Amur Leopard (worldwildlife.org/species/amur-leopard) update: their population is slowly rebounding from the frightening low counts of 2007, when only 14 to 20 were found in the wild. Russia established Land of the Leopard National Park (wcs.org/news-and-features-main/land-of-the-leopard-national-park.aspx) on 9 April 2012, where Amur Leopards and Siberian Tigers are protected, giving both species a better chance of survival in the wild. A new survey of Amur Leopards done since then found 50 of them in Russia, and their numbers in China are estimated to be a further 8 to 12. A little land, a little food, and freedom from poaching are all most species need to survive. If we are willing to set aside enough of the Earth for other species, if our single species can resist its impulse to possess, inhabit, or exploit every square inch of it, then the other 8.7 million eukaryotic species have a chance to coexist with us. With great power comes great responsibility. We who wield these unprecedented powers over the biosphere must wield them for the good of all.
