An ATSF Railway (Santa Fe) passenger special is shown headed - TopicsExpress

An ATSF Railway (Santa Fe) passenger special is shown headed northbound (timetable west) at Navarre, Kan., on Oct. 14, 1990, while enroute to Abilene for activities being held in connection with the Dwight D. Eisenhower Centennial observance. This was the first such passenger special over this line in many years. The train had picked up its passengers in Kansas City and then was routed to Emporia and then west to Neva, where it turned northwest on the Strong City Subdivision to finish its trip to Abilene. President Eisenhower had made similar trips via the Santa Fe when he held office. Abilene is where the former president grew up.. The Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum are located in Abilene. The BNSF Railway (ex-ATSF) switch yard is just northeast of the Presidential Library and Museum complex, with the main line running along the north side of the grounds and Ikes boyhood home.
