An Aphex a day: AFX: .000890569 Years ago I used to do something I called tape fishing, which was basically the act of using a blank long-playing audio cassette to tape and record certain college radio shows that I was interested in but wasnt always able to be present to listen to. This was one way I found out about new music. Usually the shows would run very late at night, or early in the morning. Later Id listen to it in my car to hear if I caught anything particularly good to my ears. Many times, unfortunately, the radio disc jockey never spoke, and Id have no clue as to who or what I was listening to. Such is the case with quite a few Richard D. James productions, including his track as AFX called .000890569. It was a track I loved driving to, and for the longest time I had assumed it was something perhaps out of Detroit, or Chicago, both cities whose techno and house pioneers were far more well known in Europe than in their own backyard. When I finally ended up buying the Analogue Bubblebath 3 CD (at Best Buy, of all places!), I was thrilled to hear this one on the disc. You can hear the influence of the likes of Juan Atkins or Carl Craig in this one, and RDJ himself talked about wanting to make records that sounded like they came from both the Motor and Windy cities.
