An MPesa agent told a city court he lost more than Sh70,000 to a fraudster who promised to double his money. Douglas Onyancha allegedly lost Sh73,500 at Kiwanja market on December 1 to Evans Owuor, who promised that he could double the money. Onyancha said he was in his shop around 10am when the accused told him he could double the money using some chemicals and ‘ancestoral’ powers.’ To demonstrate his powers, the suspect allegedly asked the complainant to give him Sh200, which he folded in some paper, dipped into some chemicals and after five minutes, Onyancha was shocked to see two resembling notes. Onyancha told police the accused used the other note he had ‘made’ to buy soda in a nearby shop without any problem. Excited, the complainant gave Owuo Owuor money. The accused allegedly claimed to have run out of chemicals, and asked for 15 minutes to get some more. When Onyancha called him 30 minutes later, Owuor demanded Sh15,000 more, claiming it was meant to convince the ancestors to unleash their magical powers. Owuor denied the charge and was set free on a Sh50,000 bond. His trial begins on February 19.
