An announcement has been made that all of the Lassies bred by Rudd - TopicsExpress

An announcement has been made that all of the Lassies bred by Rudd and Bob Weatherwax have been granted AKC registration under the kennel name Weatherwax Collies which is owned by Bob Weatherwax and his daughter. However part of the announcement has information that is faulty that needs clarification. In particular there is one paragraph with many errors, It states- ******************************************** The line was meant to be the exclusive property of Rudd and then Bob Weatherwax. In the last decade, however, some “Lassie” puppy owners broke their contracts and bred their “Lassie” descendants. None of those particular Collies came from Weatherwax litters that produced an actual “Lassie.” So those people and their Collies have no right to claim AKC registration, nor can they be considered as direct relatives of the Weatherwax line. ********************************************* Here are the faults of that paragraph- The line dogs were owned 50/50 by Frank and Rudd Weatherwax and it was Frank Weatherwax who agreed Bob should continue the breeding and training after Rudd passed away. Frank always seems to get left out like he never existed. After Frank died, the trademark was left to 8 surviving heirs of Rudd and Frank of which Bob was one. As noted earlier, the family sold the trademark in 2000. This claim that contracts were broken to breed dogs is unsubstantiated and has never been proven. I personally know of at least 6 people who bred their dogs with Bobs full knowledge and consent and most did not ever have any contract. One collie that was bred by Bob and became Lassie while he was owned by Bob Weatherwax, and again became Lassie after Bob retired, is missing from a list posted, as well as Spook, an early Lassie that was the most photographed Lassie ever whose promo shots are still used today. According to the AKC those people can indeed obtain AKC registrations, along with all of their descendants if the proper documentation is presented that traces to a dog that is now registered. They would not be part of the Weatherwax Collies kennel name, but they can be AKC registered just like the rest were. Those same collies they say cannot be registered, that the AKC says can possibly be registered, will ALWAYS have those Weatherwax Collies in their ancestors, just as new collies bred under the Weatherwax Collies banner will always have Lassies in their ancestors even though they are not Lassie now. Its no different than tracing a dog back to the Sunnybank Collies or any other well known kennel. Not carrying a kennel name does not erase history or bloodlines. Todays Lassie continues the same traditions and legacy of Rudd Weatherwax where a previous Lassie sires the next one, so the Lassie line continues as always regardless of what kennel or registered name is put on it.
