An e-mail is one again currently circulating in various forms - TopicsExpress

An e-mail is one again currently circulating in various forms claiming that by going to a particular web site and clicking, the SPCA or animals in South Africa will be helped. This is untrue. This e-mail is in no way connected with the SPCA, was not initiated by ourselves and the process outlined does not benefit the SPCA in South Africa. One variation on this mail directs people to barkingmad.co.za – a web site which asks people to buy and donate pet food for animal welfare organisations. We fully support this. This web site also makes it clear that the “chain-mail” is in no way connected to the SPCA. Tracy of the Barking Mad organisation posted the message below: - We do not know who created this email, it was not us, unfortunately someone has taken an international email for the animal rescue site and added our details to this. We try our best to curb the spread of this email as we have nothing to do with the animal rescue site either. Sorry for the inconvenience, we are doing our best to stop it. Thank you for caring Tracy There is a system in the USA whereby individuals can go to “The Animal Rescue Site” and by clicking, their e-mail address is captured. E-mail addresses are then sold in bulk to marketing companies and salespeople, the income from which is used to purchase pet food. It does benefit animals – in the USA. The National Council of SPCAs has frequently been asked why we do not adopt a similar system. We have examined it and believe that the public should be told upfront that their e-mail address is being captured and sold for commercial purposes. Members of the public can then make an informed decision. SPCAs country-wide do need support. There are no quick-fixes. If anyone wishes to support animals at SPCAs by donating food, this would be a worthy gesture. Please purchase the food and take it to your local SPCA.
