An expansion of weight loss surgery in England is being proposed to tackle an epidemic of type 2 diabetes. BBC News reports that new draft guidelines from the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) aim to reduce debilitating complications. Diabetes UK estimates 850,000 people could be eligible for surgery, but NICE expects it to be tens of thousands. The Food Doctor says poor food choices such as eating regular processed and poor quality food are also particularly associated with having a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It only takes a few simple lifestyle changes to greatly reduce your risk and lead you down a much healthier and happier path in life. These include: • Avoid refined, processed foods high in sugar; • Eat plenty fresh vegetables every day to provide essential nutrients for health; • Increase your daily activity. A sedentary lifestyle is associated with a much higher risk of developing diabetes and also with developing complications should you develop the disease; • Make sure you maintain good levels of hydration. Although it is important to point out that excessive thirst is often one of the first symptoms of diabetes so if you suffer from this talk to your GP; • Ensure good levels of essential fats in your diet by including lots of fish, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables.; • Ensure you have good levels of Vitamin D. This has been shown in studies to be protective of the insulin producing cells in the bodies therefore it may help protect against Type 1 diabetes. It is also reported that it may be highly effective for reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes as well. Vitamin D has been shown to improve blood sugar balance and insulin sensitivity. Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin but is also found in small amounts in dairy, eggs and oily fish such as mackerel and salmon.
