An intense, long but successful day at Oxford. The highlight of the day and for a long time was attending a talk by the peerless Jan Morris, my favorite living writer. We had corresponded for years and had dinner in New York about 15 years ago. She is now 87. Faber and Faber has most of her 40+ books and collections in elegant paperback editions. I own most of them but bought copies of two that I already own. One is Venice, one of those rare books that changes a readers life (at least mine). The other is Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere, which Jan says is her best book. Late in the event, she announced that this will be her last public appearance. People queued up for autographs and, although I am not an autograph hounds, this one I wanted. I stood in line, making sure I was the very last one to get a signature at her last public appearance. She signed Venice and Trieste. I will treasure these....we had a lovely, small catch-up. In a few hours I lecture at Oxford about Richard Strauss and then do some recording for the BBC.
