An interesting question: My first full-blown visual arts crush was for the mosaics in S. Vitale, Ravenna. First viewed in slides, and then the object of a five-day pilgrimage, dawn-to-dusk, when I was in college. The second, concurrent crush was with the paintings of Rothko. I am able to write/talk about the Ravenna mosaics, but find it nearly impossible to express my thoughts and feelings about Rothko. Perhaps, I shall try to tie these two loves together: something about light, surface, resonance and epiphany.
