An old friend stopped by yesterday that I havent seen in years. The last time we spoke I wasnt vegan and I remembered how he used to tell me hunting stories and talk about how much he loved to hunt. I was uncomfortable thinking that him and me were going to get into a heated argument and possibly damage our friendship. I explained why Im vegan, because Im opposed to slavery and I think you are too? He says slavery sucks! I talked for about an hour with him and I was really really uncomfortable. Towards the middle of our conversation he says I havent hunted in years and youre making a lot of sense. I dont want to hurt animals. Tell me more about this vegan thing. I explained how animals are persons and how they should never be used as a resource to another. Animals feel pain and desire to live their own lives without us exploiting or killing them. He says two times in my life I have had powerful experiences where I realized how using animals is wrong. The first time is when I was a young boy on my uncles farm and the baby cows had a sign over them that said due date. I asked my uncle what does due date mean? He said thats when they will be sent off to be killed for veal. I said they actually put a murder date over the cows. He said yes it broke my heart, I have never forgot those signs. The second time was when I was fishing a few months ago and I caught a fish that was fighting on my line and a man next to me kept yelling rip that fishs lips off! Rip those lips off! I thought wow this is fCkd up what this man is yelling and I dont want to be a part of this. He says Im looking for a change in my life and I think what you are explaining is something I would like to try. After our long conversation I gave him some abolitionist literature and he thanked me. He came over my house today and I made him lunch. A man who I thought would have been hostile to animal rights acted very receptive. Only time will tell where he will take this new experience.
