An open letter to my hero: Today is Friday. And it’s a special day, and a sad day. A day to celebrate, a day to reflect, a day to grieve, a day to smile. Today is the day that you turn a new page in your book of life. A life that has been filled with many an adventure, and of which an epic one has been playing out for nineteen and a half years. I watched you drive away today in a red sports car, just as I did when this journey began. One which started with a nearly missed phone call but has continued to being a life changing one; for you, for me, for our family, for FM, and for literally thousands of students. Your reach has gone farther than you will ever know, as your selfless acts of kindness, commitment, compassion flow through each body that has sat in your classroom and office and has been passed on to others who haven’t. The countless hours you spent before and after classes, at night at the dining room table, in your office, on the road through all kinds of weather. The countless hugs and tissues you handed out, the countless times you reminded someone of their true worth and IALAC, and how you helped the lost to be found. All of these moments of your dedication are just the tip of the immense iceberg you have created in your legacy. Thank you. For my entire existence, I have watched you teach, in ALL realms of life and places. In a classroom, in the hallway, in the office, at the kitchen table, in the car, in the grocery store, on a beach, just to name a few. And while I am sad to know that you won’t be in the official classroom next semester, I am truly comforted in knowing that you will never stop teaching. I speak for your family in that we have all been blessed to be able to share you with the world and know there are still so many lives that are waiting to be positively impacted by you, which without a shadow of a doubt will happen. You teach, you guide, you allow for a person to stumble yet offer a gentle hand. That’s the beauty of you. Your enthusiasm is something that I treasure, not only as it has cheered me on, but has cheered on SO many others. I can only hope that I will be able to be half of the amazing person you are, a lofty goal, but one that I dedicate my life to achieving as a way to honor you. So, I am not going to say Happy Retirement, as that has a general connotation of feeling relieved to be done and gone. I know that this is not the case, so what I will say instead, is Happy Day. I truly wish for you happiness in your next endeavor and hope that it nurtures your soul as this adventure has. I look forward to seeing what life has in store for you, the mountains you will conquer, the lives you will change. So Happy Day Mama Seppa, Mamaprof, Mama Seppdawg. I love you.
