And heres some good news from UIUC: Dec. 9, 2014 Approved College of Engineering Executive Committee Memo on Hiring Policy The College of Engineering Executive Committee (EC) has carefully and deliberately considered the issues surrounding hiring controversies. While we appreciate many passionate views on the subject, several important issues need to be highlighted that transcend specific cases. Foremost, the EC is concerned about the adverse impact that several units in the University are experiencing or may experience as a result of the national reaction to some recent hiring decisions. The EC believes that the University as a whole suffers when any of its units suffer. While the Board of Trustees and the Administration work to improve the hiring process, the EC would like to reiterate the principles that we must uphold going forward: 1. We strongly endorse the importance of academic freedom. The University has endorsed the AAUP Policy Statement on Academic Freedom. We believe the University must follow this policy in cases involving academic freedom. An important implication of this policy is laid out in the AAUP’s report on Academic Freedom and Electronic Communications. It is important that the policy be uniformly applied to extramural speech in all cases of hiring, tenure and promotion of faculty at the university, following the letter and intent of Article X, Section 2, of the University of Illinois statutes. 2. We strongly support the principle of shared governance. We appreciate the creation of Provost Communication #27 , which should be widely disseminated and discussed. “Key Decisions” made by Executive Officers clearly include hiring, and the reiteration of the shared governance principles should provide clear direction going forward. 3. We strongly reiterate the importance of the hiring and advancement of faculty being based solely on scholarly peer evaluation.
