Angkor Wat Wins the ArchaeoMadness 2014 Competition AKP Phnom Penh, October 24, 2014 -- Angkor Wat of Cambodia was crowned this years ArchaeoMadness champion after beating Caracol, the largest Maya site in Belize, in the championship round on Oct. 17. Angkor Wat came out on top in the ArchaeoMadness 2014 with 1,990 votes or 53 percent against Caracol gaining 1,887 votes or 50 percent, the Archeological Institute of America posted on its website. ArcheoMadness competition is organized by the Archeological Institute of America to mark the International Archeology Day, held annually on the third Saturday in October. According to the Archaeological Institute of America, designed as a bracket-style competition, ArchaeoMadness included 32 archaeological sites in a single elimination tournament. Each day participants voted for their favorite archaeological site in a head-to-head competition between two sites. The winning sites from each match-up moved on to the next round and this was repeated in each round until the championship. Located among the lush tropical forests of Cambodia, Angkor Wat, a 9th-15th century Khmer capital as well as an artistic and architectural icon, beat out several other well-known sites before being crowned as this year’s champion, including Chaco Canyon (USA), Machu Picchu (Peru), Tikal (Guatemala), and Cahokia (USA).
