Annotations to Maggie’s Civil War Journal, December 1864: This journal entry logs a visit to Mount Alban. Gunfire had reduced the home to near rubble. It brings to memory an entry of 1862 when she recorded the following, “Wednesday, March 26th 1862. I was very brisk in rising this morning notwithstanding I spent such a wretched night. Our trunks came very unexpectedly late last night and oh! I can’t tell how glad I was to get a new dress to put on. Pa didn’t come in to-day as he promised. I have felt very miserable all day because I have failed to be as strict in my religious duties as heretofore. I must endeavor to steal away from the family and give a portion of time to my religious observances which are to me of far greater delight than all worldly amusements. Besides neglecting the above, I have not guarded as closely as I ought my enemy temper which is at times beyond control, but I hope by praying to soon entirely overcome it. Just as I am writing [cousin] Ellen is playing that beautiful song “Home Sweet Home”. O! how to my eyes will that song bring bitter tears. That sacred spot whose memory is so dear to his heart is perhaps left desolate and is now only occupied by an evading face. Such is the fate of war.” Wednesday, December, 28th 1864. I rose early. Pa and I went out home. Words fail to depict the desolation which meets the eye at every turn. O! it is heart-rending and time will never efface the cruel marks of war! Very cold and clear. The Federals vacated the front parlor and we hope will finally give up the whole house. Pictured: (1) Maggie Vaulx (2) Joseph Vaulx (3) 1862 journal page (4) book Please SHARE with your friends.
