Relevant Applications Are Most Welcomed Position: Communications Specialist Open Date: December 16, 2014 Closing Date: February 1, 2015 Location: Stavanger, Norway (with the opportunity for occasional travel) Job Type: Initially One-Year Contract Hours: 37.5 hours per week Salary: Competitive Education: Minimum Bachelors, Prefer Master’s Degree General Information Who We Are: We are an international NGO established in June 2008 with the aim to enhance and support both human rights and development by adopting new strategies and policies for real change. To this end, GNRD is a neutral and impartial organisation with a focus on: the enhancement of cooperation and partnership between the private and public sector in the academic, technical and political spheres; providing technical and humanitarian assistance in developing countries; promoting social justice, conflict mediation, and ensuring the application of rights recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). GNRD’s branches are located in Austria, Belgium, Jordan, Spain, Sudan, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Zambia. GNRD’s Head Office is located in Stavanger, Norway. General Criteria GNRD employees operate in a spirit of partnership, which demands team-work, collaborative decision-making, transparency, mutual respect, integrity, personal initiative, creativity, political and interpersonal sensitivity and professional discretion. Communications Specialist Position Responsibilities The principle responsibilities of the Communications Specialist are: - Eliminating errors or ambiguities following translations in documentation from other languages - Ensuring the edited text is professionally presented and grammatically correct in English - Ensuring that human rights and UN terminology is respected and used appropriately in all texts - Writing relevant communication tools, such as human rights articles, fact sheets, and newsletters, to name a few - Updating GNRD’s social media sites, such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Skills and Experience - Must have passion for human rights - Must have minimum Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism, English Literature, or similar area of study - Minimum two years experience working/ volunteering in a human rights organisation or not-for profit sector - Proven editing and writing experience (will be required to provide samples of work) - Knowledge of human rights terminology and thorough understanding of the UN system - Proven analytical skills - Ability to take the initiative, cooperate and communicate effectively with team members, and work autonomously with limited supervision - Ability to meet strict deadlines and work well under pressure - High attention to detail - Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, primarily ‘Word’, including the ability to design and format documents. Language Requirements - Perfect command of the English language, which must be the candidates native language - It is preferred that the candidate is multilingual, with the ability to communicate orally and in writing, in at least two languages, such as French, Norwegian and/or Arabic (but not limited to these languages). This role will suit an enthusiastic professional with native English language skills. Candidates will be required to do a test edit before a final decision, prior to employment.
