Another icon of my halcyon youth has fallen. Joe Cocker died today, aged 70. It is said that Joe was afflicted of lung cancer. No one who grew up in those psychedelic, tie-dyed days will ever forget the afternoon appearance by Joe Cocker on stage at Woodstock, the day he exploded onto the music scene with an incredible rendition of a much-loved Beatles hit. Not long ago, Suzy and I were fortunate to see a renowned musician of my acquaintance at a bistro in Jackson. During a break, he came over to our table and while there, he lamented the lack of true hard-working performers. As he put it, You wont see anyone crawling around on stage these days, unless theyre looking for a dropped contact. Thats true enough, but Joe Cocker was one of those rare performers who gave each and every show everything he had. Joe left it all on stage and always left his audience wanting more.
