Another slice of local history goes under the hammer when the HUGELY important Kameruka Estate is put up for auction in November. The property was one of many established locally by the Imlay brothers in the 1830s, and after the Walker family took over, the magnificent homestead was constructed during the 1840s. Next in line were the Twofold Bay Pastoral Association, who owned the estate during the 1850s, and then, when the Association was dissolved in 1860, the Tooth family of brewing fame became owners. The estate boasts many unique elements, including Lords View Oval, where local cricketers team faced a visiting English XI team in 1888. The property remained in the Tooth familys ownership for almost a century and a half until 2007 and the approaching auction is only the second time since 1860 that it has faced change of ownership. Strangely enough, however, although it is listed on the Bega Valley Shire Councils Local Environment Plan, it has never been listed on the State equivalent.
