Anti-Kitty propaganda in France? A stranger than fiction story has appeared about a women attacked by no less than six feral cats in France. The story claims the women and their poodle were attacked when they were walking at the edge of a wood in Belfort, in the Franche-Comté region, between Lyon and Strasbourg. women attacked by cats in france Attack! This story first appeared in the French newspaper Est Republican. Here is a translation: It’s not a trivial thing when cats prey on humans. It was 9 pm on Sunday, when a 31 year old woman who was walking her small dog at the edge of woods at Terrasses du Mont was attacked by half-a-dozen cats. Without warning, they came out of the bushes and tried to jump on her little poodle dog. “The cats scratched and bit my daughter several times very hard,” said Josette Galliot mother of the victim. “They attacked her and knocked her over. The cats bit her on the leg and arm. They even pierced her artery. My daughter went through a living a nightmare. She is still traumatized and on the edge of depression. “ Apparently, the women went to a hospital where she was given a rabies injection and the dog received veterinary attention. Incidentally the last case of rabies in France was in 1923 (apart from imported animals) so this is not likely to be an explanation. It seems to me that this story is from the beginning most likely to be an exaggeration. It’s a most curious thing all six cats were involved. Frankly, its almost impossible to get cats to do almost anything in coordination, let alone attack a women and her dog. It get much worse than this because this then gets reported in a flood of melodramatic articles in the US, UK and other English speaking media. Some newspapers even warned people visiting France to beware gangs of marauding cats. In this milder example in NBC News Science it starts with a sensible comment: Veterinary specialist Valerie Dramard believes the cats were protecting their territory from the poodle, and the woman simply got in the way. “Cats are not new zombies of the apocalypse,” Dramard said reassuringly. “They are just very territorial and unfriendly with unknown species.” But cats are known as aggressive hunters, too: Recent research has revealed that cats kill between 1.4 billion and 3.7 billion birds, and between 6.9 billion and 20.7 billion small mammals, each year in the United States. Some wildlife conservationists have even proposed a ban on cats… “We must get rid of this scourge,” Galliot said. “There are too many cats in the neighborhood, many of which are strays. There are also lots of children here. We don’t want it to happen again.” So now this event that (1) may or may not have happened as described (2) and, if it did, was a most rare occurrence, produces a story containing “zombies of the apocalypse”, “aggressive hunters” ,”ban on cats”, “we must get rid of this scourge”. They could of course have stopped at “the cats were protecting their territory from the poodle, and the woman simply got in the way” but that would not have made such a good story. If dogs had attacked the women and her poodle there would not have been a story at all. Because some cats were involved — an almost unique event — it was reported in exaggerated terms the world over like cats were the new zombies of the apocalypse. The problem is that the more untruths are told about cats the more people who do not really know cats believe them. Cat lovers everywhere must stand up for cats against this endless anti-cat propaganda. From the Pussington Post.
