Anyone near #Bucks? Great event coming up THIS weekend! Steaming into the suburbs with heritage steam train rides between Amersham and Harrow-on-the-Hill! London Transport Museum’s newly restored Metropolitan steam Locomotive No.1 and ‘Jubilee’ Carriage 353 are bringing steam back to the Metropolitan Line on the 7 and 8 September. And on Sunday the steam runs will coincide with both Amersham Heritage Day in the old town and the inaugural Town Show by the station at Amersham-on-the Hill, with many activities taking place at both events. Trains will run throughout the day between Amersham and Harrow-on-the-Hill with passengers choosing to travel in either the beautiful Victorian ‘Jubilee’ carriage or in former British Rail carriages dating from the 1950s. A GWR Pannier Locomotive and a GWR Prairie will be in action, along with Metropolitan Engine No.12 Sarah Siddons and a Class 20 Diesel. A new model Pannier Tank L94 will be launched for sale at the event, with prices to be confirmed. Metropolitan No.1 was built for work on the Metropolitan Railway in 1898. It worked the line for decades before being withdrawn from service in 1963. It will be a thrilling sight to see the engine carrying passengers once again through London’s suburban areas as it did from the end of the nineteenth century. Also present will be the former Metropolitan Railway Carriage 353. It carried passengers until 1905, when some of the line was electrified. After years of neglect, 353 has been meticulously restored with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the London Transport Museum Friends and now provides the opportunity to see and experience what it was like to travel on the Metropolitan line more than one hundred years ago. Tickets for the steam runs are priced between £15 and £45. A limited selection of tickets will be available to purchase at Amersham station from 11.00 hours each day. However, due to high demand London Transport Museum cannot guarantee availability for all journeys. For advance tickets you can book online at ltmuseum.co.uk and to receive up to date information on ticket availability please call 0207 565 7298. Please note that children under the age of 11 are not allowed to travel in the 353 Coach. Sunday 8 September – Events at Amersham Old Town and Amersham on the Hill • Amersham Old Town – Heritage Day London Transport Museum Friends will run a free heritage bus service on 8 September from Amersham station to Amersham Old Town where there will be an opportunity to enjoy guided tours of the Old Town led by guides dressed in Tudor costume. At Amersham Museum visitors can discover how to research the history of their home, and families can make mini Metro-land houses to take home. Entry to Amersham Museum is free to visitors displaying their heritage steam train tickets. • Amersham-on-the-Hill – Town Show Visitors can also enjoy the inaugural Town Show in Amersham-on-the-Hill, near the station, on Sunday 8 September. The theme will be ‘Metro-land’ to coincide with London Underground’s 150th anniversary. After the success of the Amersham Metro-land exhibition in June, there will be a similarly fascinating display at the Town Show. Other family fun activities will include a bouncy castle, live music, and a funfair, as well as a horticultural and domestic produce show. amersham-tc.gov.uk/Core/Amersham-Town-Council/Pages/Heritage_Day_2013_4.aspx
