Anyone noticed that every few years, petrol is the big polluter, then a few years later, its diesel. I picked up a trainee petro chemical engineer some 30 years ago after his car broke down. We had an interesting conversation where he informed me that his thesis was on the ratio of Diesel to petrol cars. At the time, the government were promoting lead free petrol and diesels were Satan spawn. He told me to wait and see; as Diesel is part of the petrol refining process, we have to have more petrol engines than diesel for the whole process to function. Fast forward 30 years, 2 out of 3 private cars are diesel, diesel is more expensive than petrol and that hirsute toss pot Boris Johnson is calling for baby diesels to be culled. On a side note; I used to drive a smokey old Astra diesel that did 65 miles to the gallon, now I have a modern diesel, with particle filter, catalytic converter and EGR valve, its lucky to get 30mpg because of all the bollocks. The environmental debt of modern cars is astronomical. We should all stick the middle finger up to our bastard corrupt Government and all buy Austin Allegros; 60mpg all day long and they dont cost a bean in ED because theyre here already. Real recycling; buy an old banger and save a new car from being built.
