* * * Lost in translation: Hashim backtracks by denying ever threatening Jokowi’s government Hashim Djojohadikusomo, brother of defeated presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, denied he would set up roadblocks for Jokowi’s incoming government as a form of personal payback to the president-elect. He said Indonesian media on the whole misinterpreted his original interviews with The Wall Street Journal and Reutersrespectively. “Such news is inaccurate and misrepresentative of my opinion and that of the Merah Putih coalition (KMP),” said Hashim, as quoted by Antara on Friday. Hashim said what has been translated and reported on in the national media were far removed contextually and in content from his initial interviews. But is Indonesia’s local media that inept at simple translations? We tracked down both of Hashim’s initial interviews, beginning withReuters. As an example, Detik translated the piece with the headline, “Hashim Djojohadikusumo: kami akan pakai power untuk hambat Jokowi” (Hashim Djojohadikusumo: we will use our power to obstruct Jokowi). So how accurate was Detik in this occasion? They were spot on. A snippet from the Reuters article read: But he [Jokowi] lacks the support of a majority of members of parliament and is expected to face objections to his reform program from opposition members grouped in a coalition led by losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. We will use our power to investigate and to obstruct, Prabowos tycoon brother and top aide Hashim Djojohadikusumo told Reuters late Tuesday at his office in Jakarta. Read in entirety, the context and content of both articles are also similar. Both articles essentially spelled out Hashim’s plans to use the KMP’s legislative dominance to investigate two graft cases in which Jokowi himself was never accused of any wrongdoing. The second of the interviews was with The Wall Street Journal.Kompas adapted the piece with the headline, “Hashim sebut ada harga yang harus dibayar Jokowi atas pencapresannya” (Hashim says there’s a price to pay for Jokowi after his presidential nomination). Did Hashim really warn Jokowi? Yes, according to the interview with The Wall Street Journal: “Yes, Mr. Jokowi there is a price to be paid,” he [Hashim] added, referring to Mr. Widodo by his nickname. Mr. Djojohadikusumo said he is motivated in part by what he sees as Mr. Widodo’s personal betrayal. One of Indonesia’s wealthiest men, Mr. Djojohadikusumo said he was Mr. Widodo’s primary financial campaign backer when he won the Jakarta governorship two years ago. Both the articles on The Wall Street Journal and Kompas essentially told Hashim’s plan to, once again, take advantage of the KMP’s dominance to actively and constructively oppose Jokowi’s government. That would’ve been all well and good, but Hashim just couldn’t keep his personal motives hidden. Even Hashim’s friends at the KMP did well to distance themselves from his agenda. For Mr. Backtracky Hashim, it must have seemed easier to blame the media than to admit the ugliness of what he said. He even finished his clarification statement with a few fiery last words for the Indonesian media. “The reality is this is really worrying because not only did [the media] do a lot of harm to their victims, but this is also an act that dumbs down the nation. There is no positive contribution to Indonesia whatsoever in a time when we are trying to rise as a nation,” Hashim said, as quoted by Antara. Sorry Hashim, but we’d say the guy who tries to cover up what he says in half-truths and obfuscations is the one who is really trying to dumb down the nation * * * m.tempo.co/read/news/2014/10/10/078613438/AJI-Minta-Hashim-Buktikan-jika-Ada-Berita-Keliru
