Apparently some people are so socially isolated that every transaction with a store clerk, coffee order filler at Starbucks or appointment scheduler in a clinic is a major social event. Today a middle aged woman had a literally ten minute discussion about the coffee choices and ingredient alternatives with an order filler at Caribou Coffee, as the queue behind her grew and grew, to which she was completely oblivious. Initially I asked her whether she was waiting in line, as she partially blocked the line of patrons while standing about eight feet away from the cash register, leaving a large ambiguous space before the check out. When I asked, She seemed startled,Is there a problem? She asked. If you arent in line, Ill move up. I replied. Yes, Im in Line she said sharply, moving one step forward shortening the space to 6-7 feet.. She must have been having a wonderful time inconveniencing so many people. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) revision IV describes passive-aggressive personality disorder as a pervasive pattern of negativistic attitudes and passive resistance to demands for adequate performance in social and occupational situations.
