April 16, 2007. A beautiful morning in Houston, night after a lovely show outdoors in the nature sanctuary at Habitat House Concerts. Day 1 of my 4 day self-imposed, studio-deadline driven writers retreat amidst the bluebonnet carpeted plains of central Texas. I got in the van headed to my friends cottage near Round Top, and the radio and my cell phone lit up with the news from Blacksburg. Lots of friends had kids at Virginia Tech. The next 3 days it seemed like all my creative energy went into running away from the breathless streaming ticker speculation. As we mourned the tragic and senseless loss, I finally found the words - and the moment of peacefulness - to capture my feelings.
