Are Mammograms Worth The Risk? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two things I take away from this study that evaluated the risks vs. benefits of mammograms from 1960-2014: 1) For a 40- or 50-year-old woman undergoing 10 years of annual mammograms, the cumulative risk of a false-positive result is about 61%. (Meaning that 61% of the millions of women in the world undergoing mammograms will be INCORRECTLY diagnosed with breast cancer. Just think about the emotional trauma that accompanies such a false report!) 2) Mammography screening is associated with a 19% overall reduction of breast cancer mortality - approximately 15% for women in their 40s and 32% for women in their 60s. (However, many experts claim that thermography scanning is even more effective than mammography. One study evaluating 58,000 patients with breast complaints between 1965 and 1977 discovered that mammography missed tumors on 1,245 women and that thermography picked them up - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7351006) According to one source: Breast thermography has been researched for over 30 years, and over 800 peer-reviewed breast thermography studies exist. In this data base well over 250,000 women have been included as study participants. The numbers of participants in many studies are very large ranging from 37,000 to 118,000 women. Some of these studies have followed patients up to 12 years. Breast thermography has an average sensitivity and specificity of 90%. This means there is a 10% chance pathology being missed. Studies show that: - An abnormal infrared image is also the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer - 8 times more significant than a first order family history of the disease. - A persistent abnormal thermogram caries with it a 22x higher risk of future breast cancer. -A positive infrared scan may indicate the presence of many different breast abnormalities such as mastitis, benign tumors, fibrocystic breast disease, cancer, and others. - ubcf.info/your-health/breast-thermography/
