Are you a poser? (aka: Do you really know what you know?) Lots of marketers (especially those who graduated with marketing degrees) can quote you the 4Ps of marketing. They can talk about the latest marketing buzzwords. They can act the act and pose the pose. Often times, the public is none the wiser. They think that since those people know all the buzzwords, they know what theyre doing. Shockingly, often times they dont. Thats the only extend of their knowledge and expertise - knowing the buzzwords and the generic principles. Knowing the details comes from experience, not just regurgitating theories from something else, or someone else. Similarly, in business its the same. Lots of business owners think they know about marketing. They know the buzzwords. They read the books, the articles, the information brochures... and they think they know. Often times I hear business owners say things like, Oh yeah, we have our 4Ps. or We already have a differentiation from our competitors. or We have a clear positioning. Etc, etc. Only to proceed and prove that they dont really know what theyre talking about. Not really. They were doing things wrongly without knowing it. Ego. They think they know. But they actually dont. And thats one of the most dangerous place to be. Cos they are not even aware that they dont know (thinking they already know). Or theyre not aware that they know the wrong things, thinking theyre the right things. Ego. And because they think they know, they wont look for the right way of doing things. Ego. Its sad. But this tragedy is common in the marketplace. So ask yourself: Do you really know what you think you know? If you do, are you getting the results that you want based on the knowledge of what you know? If youre not, you might not really know what you think you know.
