Arguably the best time to put some meat in the freezer is upon us. With Christmas just around the corner there is no better time to invite a few mates around and fire up the BBQ. Recently I went for a hunt in Tatarakina, the area is traditionally known for good deer numbers but very poor head quality. I come across this solid six point red stag that appeared to be hard underneath the velvet so I put it on the deck for a bit of meat for Christmas. It was in prime condition and the velvet was hard as a rock. This is very early for a bush stag but encouraging to know a few of the mature animals are coming along. I bumped into several other animals before eventually making it out of the bush wet to the bone dreaming of a return. Certainly one of my happy places.
