As I lean back in my chair, rubbing my eyes with my thumb and forefinger, I spot a tiny jumping spider, lazily picking his way up the wall of my cubicle. His black body and orange stripe contrast against the tan fabric that makes up most of my little square of the American Dream. I assume the mute color and lazy pattern are psychologically engineered to stifle the desire to dive into a rage and turn an office space into a post office, studies show that this specific color, and the way the shiny thread that makes up the simple pattern statistically promote little or no feelings of rage, hatred and depression and therefore is perfect lining for a box you will likely spend most of your waking hours in. Or maybe it was just the cheap buy at CubiclesRUs that day. The spider reached the top of the wall. He meandered along the ridge for a few inches, then disappeared over the hump, only to reapear a moment later, wave both his front legs goodbye, said "so long Brian, enjoy the rest of your day" and turned and crawled off to another cubicle. Once he left, I realized I was suddenly very lonely. Also, not having any work to do makes for a VERY long day.
