As I posted before the holiday (or during, if you were smart and only did first op), SMS needed to undergo some changes. The reason for this is twofold. First off, no one really cares what happens on campus when you’re at home. Secondly, I was threatened by the University’s lawyers to delete the page, or face going to court. Just two days after I wrote a letter regarding (the lack of) campus safety, the University got their lawyers to send me a letter of their own telling me to remove all my social media accounts. It seems that the University doesn’t handle criticism very well. As much as I would love to fight them on this, I was technically in the wrong. It turns out that Matie is a registered trade mark, and that I can’t use it. Bear that in mind next time you tell someone how it’s lekker om ‘n Matie te is. I was never once told by a representative of the university, or anyone for that matter, that “Matie(s)” is trademarked. Not even by the law faculty that follows me on Twitter. Had they sent me an email, Whatsapp, SMS, tweet, Snapchat or a good old fashioned phone call and asked nicely, I would have gladly complied immediately. Now I’m being threatened with a court case and forced to pay the University’s legal fees. Legal fees that wouldn’t have been necessary had they bothered to talk to me instead of their lawyers. As I now know that Maties is a registered trademark, I promised I wouldn’t use “Matie” again. This left me with the dilemma of choosing a new name. Those of you that follow me on Twitter would were probably confused to find “SU Campus Quotes” in your timeline. This doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. “Shit Stellies Students Say” and “Stellies Student Quotes” were also considered. My favourite was “Said on Campus/Kampus and in the Town of Stellenbosch”. SUCK IT, Stellenbosch for short. I eventually settled on Shit Mateys Say, so as not to confuse everyone, and more importantly, not break any laws. I consider you all my mates, and these are after all your quotes. They’ll probably find another bullshit reason why I can’t use Mateys, but until then, it’s back to normal. Now who’s ready for the silly season?
