As I was feeding the Herd their supper last night, I like many savvy Snow Dog owners, know the benefits of adding fish oil to our Snow Dogs diet. But as with many things that are deemed good for you many people adopt the mind set of - if its good for you, then MORE must be even better for you. That is seldom the case and definitely not the case when it comes to consuming fish oil. The compounds in fish oil that makes it healthy for our Snow Dogs is the Essential Fatty Acid omega 3 compound and the Decosahexaenoic Acid. It is not only beneficial for skin and coat, it has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body as well effect. Additionally, this oil has been shown to valuable in treating a host of illnesses including cancers, joint pain, heart, kidney, intestinal problems, as well as geriatric dementia. Overall, the trend to supplement with fish oil is positive for our dogs but as with most things, too much of a good thing may have adverse effects on their health. The anti-inflammatory effect of EFA and DHA increases the production of certain chemicals causing a problem with blood platelet function. This could cause issues with impair wound healing and the bodys ability to form natural clotting to stop bleeding. The calculated SAFE DOSE of fish oil for your dog is between 20-55 mgs combined EPA and DHA per pound of body weight. Doing a quick calculation that means that on the low end of this recommendation, 20 mgs multiplied by 50 pounds of dog weight = 1000 mgs of fish oil. Do not forget to factor in how much EPA and DHA your dog gets from fish based dog food, fresh fish that he may be fed, and even salmon dog treats that he may get throughout the day. As you can see numbers can quickly climb so make sure that if you are supplementing fish oil, keep it to no more than 1000 mgs daily. petmd/blogs/thedailyvet/ktudor/2013/aug/the-dangers-of-too-much-fish-oil-30731
