As I was taking care of some personal business today,I came across a fellow veteran. What started as a small talk conversation,soon developed into a quick emotional abyss. This young veteran had just returned from Afghanistan,suffering from,obviously,a great deal of depression. He has yet to seek any help through the services of the VA,because he fears that no one would want to hear about his experiences hed endured through two tours(Afghanistan and Iraq). He then asked me how I dealt with Vietnam.......I replied,I didnt serve there because I was too young at the time of that particular war. All I could do.....was to give him some hope,my personal number,and some reference numbers for some Veterans Groups that I knew of that catered to that specific need....... Im now left with a feeling of anxiety not knowing what has become of this young soldier......all I can see is the sadness in his eyes and the desperation in his tone of voice....... Its situations like this,the price one pays for the service of his or her country without the physical scars of the battlefield......Ive never felt so helpless and so inept to do something for this tormented soul. Ill be so glad when the day comes,when I can get started on my education to help individuals like this.....Im afraid Im about to jump into one the most challenging careers of my life. If I can help just one to understand,they didnt serve in vain for a society that only pretends to care,maybe there will be a better chance of hope for these young lives after a mental mountain of sacrifice. Just saying.........God bless their souls
