As Pride weekend is here.. Friendly reminder that although I identify as Transgender, it is only a component of my life. I don’t have the time to sit around and argue with people about gender, nor do I have the interest. I also do not advocate for all Trans people, and therefore if you have any confusion or questions directed to specific persons, you should approach them. Why are pronouns/names important? The reality is that gender is a defining factor in how people are treated, so to dismiss them altogether also invalidates the struggle and subsequent suffering of how it impacts our lives. If you are an ally, you will respect these issues, and the right for a person to govern their body as they see fit. This also includes using appropriate pronouns, not only when speaking to a person, but also when the person is not present. It’s not about how you were raised or taught to think about gender; It’s not about whether you are comfortable using said pronouns or chosen name, and it’s not about you. It’s about respect. It’d be nice if we could overlook gender, erase the binary, and just appreciate others for who they are, but inevitably another TG person is murdered, an arrest is never made, and the issue is swept under the rug once more. Inevitably another misogynist MRA mass murders a community of women, is labeled “mentally ill”, which paves the way for others to take advantage of this loophole. People have died and continue to die trying to live in their own unique way, and this is the greatest injustice of all. So until these things cease to exist, gender will remain an important factor in my life, but it’s not all there is to me. Just as it was not in all the people we have lost. Please keep that in mind as you go out into the world this weekend, and going forward. You don’t have to agree with how others choose to live, but a little tolerance and respect allow them the safety they are entitled to.
