As a drummer (28 years and counting), let me come to the defense - TopicsExpress

As a drummer (28 years and counting), let me come to the defense of the drummer in this video. Its easy to poke fun at the drummer because...well...drummers make it easy to do so sometimes. But in this video, its not necessarily the drummers fault for the awkwardness on display. First, let me say that the drummer has skill. Hes good. What he could have done, however, is to be more sensitive to the setting and to the songs style and adjust what he plays to fit the band (not always the easiest thing to do). The band, however, is at fault as well. I realize that finding a good drummer is not easy, but its wise to make sure the drummer will fit your style before going live. If the drummer is a regular at the church, then the real issue lies with the worship leader, whose job is (in part) to ensure that the band as a whole is a cohesive unit, particularly in terms of style. Musicians need to compliment one another such that the music does not distract the congregation (as they most likely were during the song in question). Second, the band (sans drummer) was playing the song as if it was a dirge. The tempo was slower than the original song, the lyrics were drawn out, and there was less movement among the instruments than those in the original. The drummer in the video did what the original drummer did in the recording - played double that what the musicians did. That is, the musicians sustained their notes, playing mostly whole notes, half notes, etc., while the drummer in the recording played eighth notes, giving the song more movement. Granted, the drummer in the video played sixteenth notes, thus quadrupling the feel, but considering how slowly the other musicians were playing, who can blame him? The eighth note feel may have still been too slow, hence the need for sixteenth notes. Really, though, we dont know the story behind this until someone from the band speaks up. We should, however, not rush to pick on the drummer - this particular video highlights the lack of unity in musical style, which is on the entire band, not just the drummer. So, fellow drummer in the video. Rock on. Perhaps do a little more to make sure youre not sticking out too much, but nevertheless, rock on.
