As a preacher and an academic, I feel a similar way about both groups. Many academics and preachers believe they are called to their work, and are miserable in doing it, but keep doing it anyway. And their greatest success is in making themselves and others miserable. Every day requires a counting of the cost. And we must divest ourselves from the notion that the degree of our suffering is directly proportional to the level of our commitment. Too many persons are in abusive relationships with the things to which they *believe* they have been called. Let us never be fearful of admitting that when our work creates a relational toxicity in our lives, a change of course might be in order. Walking away doesnt always mean quitting. Sometimes, it means saving yourself and your mind.
