As both a baseball and numbers geek, I thought Id use a standard deviation method to rank all-time teams. What it boils down to, beyond the minutia: the degree to which a team separates itself from the pack in a given year (i.e. a great W-L record means a little less if there were more weak teams, such as in an expansion year). My top 5 all-time looks like this: 1) 1975 Reds 2) 1984 Tigers 3) 1998 Yankees 4) 1986 Mets 5) 1941 Yankees And to think the Red Sox lost heartbreaking World Series to two of those teams. Discuss?
